Today's E-Votion

the Beatitudes - being blessed
(click here to read the Beatitudes)

"possessing an inward contentness and joy that is not affected by the physical circumstances."

Matthew 5:7    God blesses those who are merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

JESUS told a story (and I assume it is a true story, since HE didn't say it was made up) about a man who owed his employer millions.  When he was about to be thrown in prison, he begged for mercy and was forgiven the debt.

Later that day he ran in to a man who owed him a few dollars and had him arrested to force him to pay, even though this person also begged for mercy.  When the first man's employer found out what he did, he reversed his decision about forgiveness and had him also thrown into prison until he paid the millions he owed.

This is a perfect demonstration of mercy and forgiveness.  In its most basic form, it goes like this:

As a follower of JESUS we have had our sins (all of them) forgiven.  Now when someone comes to us and asks for mercy, we are to give it without hesitation.

On the very positive side, this means that we build up a "mercy account" by doing so.  When we show mercy, we add to that account and when we need mercy, we are given it.  Simple!

Take a quick inventory and see if there is someone who (in their own way) desired mercy, but you have not shown the same.  Take a moment in your heart to forgive, then if it is possible, let them know.  It may be a parent or child, sibling or friend.

If you look at the top of the page for our definition of blessed you will see that doing this will bring an "inward contentment and joy."  It is well worth the energy to show mercy.

Why did JESUS bother saying this?  Because there are so many bitter Christians who have received mercy but never shown it to others.  In our story about the man who owed millions, who are you?  First man?  Second man?

If your life is hard and merciless why not take JESUS' method of fixing things.  Show a little mercy and receive mercy in return.  It works!  Really!
